Afterlife Crisis showcases the evolution of Kevin’s songwriting since his 2022 debut album Southern Dissonance, with more concise song hooks and a fuller vocal range.
Lyrically, Afterlife Crisis addresses the question: What do you experience when you die? While shrouded in mystery, the song offers a simple suggestion…it feels exactly like before you were born. Perhaps death is a return to your pre-birth state.
Instrumentally, deep space guitars create a feeling of being lost in time. A deep foreboding bass tone intertwines with the guitar leads for a sinister, sometimes dissonant, harmony. Huge drums vacillate between suspending and driving the rhythm. The interlude features a cliff-like tempo change and spirals down into what can only be described as swirling death. Top-of-your-lungs vocals contrast with the spacey vibe to convey a sense of desperate fear over not knowing what lies beyond the grave.
Remarking on the recording of Afterlife Crisis, Kevin said: “It was my original intention to record the song over a couple of weeks, but once I started laying down tracks and hearing the harmonies between the lead guitar and bass, I couldn’t stop and ended up laying down all the tracks in less than a week. I was in a ‘mood’ on the day I went in to record the vocals, which I think translated into an emotional performance. I actually ended up blowing my voice out by the end of the song and you can hear the grit in the last couple of lines.”
Kevin is a US-based artist in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has been performing the song locally at various venues.
lyrics
If you have ever wondered
How life feels six feet under
Just ask yourself before your birth
When you were still part of the earth
Don’t take my breath away from me
No leap of faith can guarantee
that you’ll land safely
In the afterlife…before eternity
In an afterlife crisis
Stone heart felt misconceptions
Deep buried self-deception
Ingrained closed minded point of view
Yeah, it’s the only one that’s true
Don’t take my breath away from me
No leap of faith can guarantee
that you’ll land safely
In the afterlife…before eternity
Don’t take my breath away now
Don’t take my breath away now
Who made you God to seal my fate?
One life to give…and yours to take
